Album Cover Redesign

OBJECTIVE: Use photography combined with typography to communicate a concept or feeling using a style of music and album title as the subject. The album selected was "It Is What It Is," by Thundercat.

Concept Sketches

I first explored as many different directions as possible, using the concept of abject loneliness, loss, and heartbreak as a common theme in all the iterations.

Digital Concept Sketch

I created a couple digital sketches to better understand the tone and the specifics of the angle, lighting, and composition of the photo. I chose an orange color palette to be reminiscent of a sunset, playing into the idea of "when the party’s over," of which the glitter in the eye makeup is also an extension.

Typographic Exploration

An exploration of a variety of typefaces and type treatments. Originally, I wanted a very minimal, simplistic sans serif to emulate a straightforward and empty feeling, but they felt too contemporary and friendly. I ultimately settled on a serif typeface, PSFournier Std Grand light italic.

Final Product

After recruiting a classmate to be the subject, I took photos using specific directional lighting. Below is the finished product, with both photo and text integrated into one comprehensive design.
